10 Ways to Secure Your Kids Against Debt

Everybody wants their children to do well.  I want my kids to grow up without making my mistakes.  Here are a few ways to help them avoid debt.

  1. Talk to your kids about money.  Your kids will never learn how to handle their finances if nobody teaches them how.   This is important.    The factor that contributes most to stress, divorce, long hours, and unhappiness can’t be left to chance.
  2. Set a good example. Spend less than you have and let them see you doing it.  No matter what you tell your kids, if they see you doing otherwise, they will learn the bad lesson.   Money, work, relationships.  They all need attention, and your kids are watching you manage each of them.  Make them proud.
  3. Open a savings account for them, and let them fill it. Teach them the value of their money by letting them work for it, watch it accumulate, and spend it on something they care about.  I make my kids work to convince me to make a withdrawal, so they know it is only for the important things.  I don’t, however, decide what is important for them.
  4. Start a college fund. $100 or $10, it doesn’t matter.  Start putting something aside today.   College costs keep rising.  In 10 years, or 20, you can be sure that college will cost more than it does today.  Last year, nearly two-thirds of students graduating with a four-year degree did so with an average debt of more than $23,000.   Anything you can do to move your kids towards the debt-free 35% will help.  They will thank you for it for the rest of their lives.  Remember, they are in charge of choosing your nursing home.
  5. Teach delayed gratification. Don’t let them think that every whim needs to be satisfied…ever, let alone immediately.  Sometimes, anticipation improves the act.   When I am looking forward to a good meal for a few days or weeks, I really savor it when I finally do get the chance to eat it.  If they want everything they see, make them figure out what they want most, and what it will take to get it.
  6. Teach them to balance a checkbook. This is one of life’s basic skills that far too many people are lacking.   If you can’t balance your checkbook, how do you know what you have?  If you don’t know what you have, how can you know what you’re able to spend on necessities, or even luxuries?  Knowing where you are is at least as important as knowing where you are going.
  7. Give them control of money. This is the best time to learn how to manage money.  Give them an allowance and make it big enough to cover school lunch and bus fare.   Let them practice real-world skills and, more importantly…
  8. Let them make mistakes with it. This is their opportunity to make financial mistakes that won’t haunt them for years or decades.   Let them have some money and let them screw it up.  When they can’t buy the new game, or can’t fix their car, they will learn.  It’s better to do that as teenagers living at home than as adults forced to move back home.
  9. Let them see your pride in their good decisions. If they do well, tell them.  Let their endorphin rush come from your praise instead of their purchase.  You aren’t helping them by getting them hooked on the latest gadget.  You are helping them by making them feel good about making the right decisions.
  10. Beat them with a stick.

Why Kelly Rutherford’s bankruptcy should make you more prudent about your finances

Kelly Rutherford is an actress. Not just an actress, but a working actress. She is not a familiar looking extra or an actress who Kelly Rutherfordfrequently guest stars on television, but someone who has appeared as a series regular on multiple high profile shows since the 1990s. She recently ended a six-season run on the CW hit “Gossip Girl.” This all makes the recent revelations of her bankruptcy that much more surprising. How does someone who has made it in an ultra-competitive, well-compensated field end up with over $2 million in debt? There are several lessons that we can learn from Kelly Rutherford’s unfortunate bankruptcy.

1. Divorce not only has an emotional cost, but can also have a steep financial cost The vast majority of Kelly Rutherford’s debt is related to her divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband German businessman Daniel Giersch. The legal battle with her ex-husband has cost her over $1.5 million.If you are considering getting a divorce, be cognizant of the fact that divorce proceedings may end up being expensive. Between attorney fees and court costs, your expenses can quickly ramp up. Try to have an objective assessment of how you expect the divorce proceedings to go. Do you expect the divorce to be amicable or acrimonious? If you have children, do you expect that you and your spouse will battle for custody? Do you have a plan in place to divide the marital assets? The more questions you can answer and plan for before divorce proceedings occur, the better chance you will have of keeping your costs down.

2. Have a plan for paying your taxes

In addition to the $1.5 million in legal fees, Kelly owes $350,000 in income tax for 2012. For the majority of us, paying taxes is simple. Your company automatically takes deductions out of your paycheck that pay for your income tax.

If you are a contractor or self-employed, it’s important to remember that not all the money you earn is yours. Make sure to set aside a certain percentage of each paycheck that you will use to pay your taxes at the end of the year. Try to estimate your expected income and taxes for the year and set up a separate account that you can use to settle your tax bill. If possible, get some guidance from an accountant on how to pay your estimated taxes quarterly.

3. Set up an emergency fund

Kelly works in a profession in which rapid changes in income are quite common. One month you are earning $40,000 per month for being on a hit show, the next month your character is written off the show or the show comes to an end and you no longer have any income coming in. In any field in which income tends to drastically change, it is especially important to set aside an emergency fund to help account for the uncertainty in income stream.

While the majority of us likely have more certainty about how much we expect to earn in the future, it is still important to set aside some funds in an emergency account. Whether you are an actor or an office worker, there is always some uncertainty about the future, and having an emergency account can make it easier to ride the ups and downs as you encounter them.

While Kelly Rutherford’s bankruptcy is sad and alarming, there are lessons we can derive from it to make us all more prudent about our financial future.

Yes, it’s Saturday.  Tomorrow, I’m hosting the Yakezie Carnival, so I bumped this up a day.

This week has been super relaxing.  Wrestling season is over.  We’re done with activities for a while.

30 Day Project Update

Last month, I was trying to do 100 perfect push-ups in a single set.  I recorded each session in a spreadsheet.  I hit my goal on the 28th, 3 days early.  Since then, I’ve cut down to just one session per day.  I’m now doing 35 slow, deep push-ups every morning.  It’s not a goal, or a challenge, just part of a general effort to be healthier.

Weight Loss Update

I am on the Slow Carb Diet.   At the end of the month, I’ll see what the results were and decide if it’s worth continuing.   For those who don’t know, the Slow Carb Diet involves cutting out potatoes, rice, flour, sugar, and dairy in all their forms.   My meals consist of 40% proteins, 30% vegetables, and 30% legumes(beans or lentils).    There is no calorie counting, just some specific rules, accompanied by a timed supplement regimen and some timed exercises to manipulate my metabolism.   The supplements are NOT effedrin-based diet pills, or, in fact, uppers of any kind.  There is also a weekly cheat day, to cut the impulse to cheat and to avoid letting my body go into famine mode.

I’m measuring two metrics, my weight and the total inches of my waist , hips, biceps, and thighs.   Between the two, I should have an accurate assessment of my progress.

Weight: I have lost 41 pounds since January 2nd.   That’s 1 pound since last week and 8 pounds in March, while doing an insane amount of push-ups and packing on a few pounds of muscle.  Seriously, for the last couple of weeks, on the days I haven’t totally slacked off, I’ve been doing 500+ push-ups a day.  That’s a lot.

Total Inches: I have lost  23 inches in the same time frame, up 1 inch since last week.   That makes me sad, but it seems to be muscle growth, so it’s not too bad.
