Christmas for the Destitute

First, my disclaimer:  I’m not destitute.

However, I’m trying to spend Christmas acting like I am a pauper.

Why, with small children and beautiful-and-more-than-deserving wife, would I want to deprive my family of a bountiful holiday?

Before we get into the reasons for being a horrible grinch bent on depriving my children of their god-given right to rampant consumerism, let’s look at the Philosophy of Destitution.

The primary reason to pull back and tone it down is basic frugality.  Excessive anything is not frugal. I am training my children–and for that matter, my wife and my self–in the finer arts of personal responsibility and frugality.   Accumulating debt for a fleeting holiday is insane.  If we can’t afford to buy it, we certainly can’t afford to give it.   Anything else would be setting a bad example and children learn best by example.

Another piece of the Philosophy of Destitution(when I read this word, I hear a deep, booming voice in my head, like a 30s radio superhero voiceover)  is “green”.    I consider myself a conservationalist rather than an environmentalist, so don’t read too much into that color.  I try to be responsible, instead of destructive and I try to avoid being wasteful.  Toys that won’t be played with are wasteful. A garbage can full of packaging for those same toys costs money.  It is much cheaper to avoid the landfill here.

Make Extra Money Part 1: Introduction

Today, I’m re-launching a new series on how I make extra money online.   This series fell off my radar for a while.  I intend to finish it now.

Right now, I have 7 sites promoting specific products, or “niche” sites.  When those products are bought through my sites, I get a commission, ranging from 40-75%.  Of those sites, 5 make money, 1 is newly finished, and 1 is not quite complete.   I’m not going to pretend I’m making retirement-level money on these sites, but I am making enough money to make it worthwhile.

Over the course of the series, I’m going to show you how to take advantage of multi-million dollar market research to choose a niche, at no cost to you.    You’ll see how I choose a domain name, where to find products to sell, and how to promote your new site.

As I write the series, you’ll get to see exactly what is working, as it’s happening.   I’ll be choosing the niche as I write the post on choosing a niche.   As of this writing, I don’t know what niche I’ll be promoting, what product I’ll be using, or what keywords I’ll be targeting.    This will be a live, totally transparent case study of how I make extra money.

Before we get started, I need you to understand a few things.

First, this is not overnight money.   My first niche site took 6 months before it made me a penny.   That was partially because my product selection research was faulty, but also because these things do take time.     I’ll show you how to pick a niche and product that won’t take that long, but you can’t expect to quit your job tomorrow.

Second, this is work.   Once everything is established and optimized, it won’t be a lot of work, but it will take time to do.   There is no such thing as “set it and forget it” internet marketing.  Anybody who tells you otherwise is selling you something you won’t be satisfied with.

Third, this isn’t free.  I’m not going to charge you anything, but some parts of this will cost money to do effectively.   I’m not a fan of throwing money away, so I won’t be suggesting anything outrageous.  If I do recommend something that costs money, I will try to recommend a free or very cheap alternative, but that won’t always be possible.    I started out slow and cheap, but now, when I launch a site, I spend some money to do it quickly and effectively.  I am a fan of paying others to do the things I dislike doing.

That’s the plan.  I’m going to tell you how I make extra money online, and I’m going to let you look over my shoulder while I set up my next site, start to finish.

Getting Back on Track

Have you ever set a goal…and failed?

At some point, it happens to all of us.   After all, our reach should exceed our grasp, right?   That doesn’t make it easy to admit failure, or to correct it.   Did you let a New Year’s resolution lapse, or slip off of a diet?   Have you started shopping indiscriminately again, or stopped going to the gym?

It’s okay if you did, but it’s time to fix it.

How can you get back on track after failing a goal?

1.  Pick a day to start over.

Just like when you first started towards your goal, you have to decide when you’re going to get back on board.    If you can’t decide, just pick the beginning of the next month.   A new beginning is a great time to tackle your new beginning.

2.  Recommit.

You failed once.  Accept it and move on.  Past behaviors don’t have to be an indicator of future performance.   Just do better this time.

3.  Announce it.

Somebody has noticed that you aren’t on the wagon.   Your coworkers are seeing you eating candy, or your spouse has noticed you buying things you don’t need.  Talk to these people.  Tell them you’re going to redo the things you’ve undone.  You’ll change the world, but you have to start with yourself.

4.  Don’t be ashamed of your lapse.

Unless I have seriously misjudged my audience, you are human.  Humans sometimes make poor decisions.  Being ashamed won’t help you, but take the opportunity to learn from the past.  Do you know what caused you to fail?  Are there triggers to your behavior that you can avoid this time around?  When I quit smoking, I tried to avoid rush hour, because I smoked heavily while I drove and I wanted to avoid being in car for as long as possible, minimizing one of my triggers.   What cause your lapse, and can you avoid it?

5.  Don’t do it again.

This one should be the most obvious, but the fact that it’s a problem means it’s not.   Do whatever it takes to not make the same mistakes and uphold your goals.  Don’t smoke.  Don’t eat garbage.  Exercise more.  Whatever you’ve decided to do or not do, do it….or not.
