Cheap Vacations

Last month, we went on vacation for a week. It was our first debt-free vacation, ever! We had a busy week, full of fun activities and it didn’t break the bank. We saved money on everything we could.
Hotel
We save a lot of money by staying at a casino/hotel that was a 20 minute trip away from our vacation city. This won’t save money if you have a problem with gambling. The only time we went to the casino was to get to the connected restaurant.
We made the hotel even cheaper by arriving on a Sunday and leaving on a Friday, avoiding the weekend rates. That gave us a full 6 day vacation with no rush to pack and 2 days to recover and relax when we were done. We just didn’t see the point of checking out on Saturday, just to head home, when we could check out on Friday, spend the day seeing the sights, then leave late.
Meals
I like good food, but feeding a family of five for a week costs far too much. So we compromised.
We brought milk and cereal to the hotel. Instead of rushing to get out of the hotel for breakfast, we had a leisurely breakfast in our jammies and took our time getting moving. No stress. For our daytrips, we packed sandwiches, juice, and snacks; avoiding the need for lunchtime restaurants. Dinner was our extravagance. Every night, we ate someplace nice. Not fancy, but nice. Our food budget was about $30 for the week, not counting dinner.
Attractions
I had a plan to keep every day fun, without resorting to using an agenda. We were far to flexible to call it an agenda. They just don’t make vacations fun for me. We had one thing planned each morning, one each afternoon, and one each evening. Every day, one of those things was spending a couple of hours in the hotel pool. No stress.
The first thing I did was hit the city’s tourism website for coupons. Yay us!
We tried to group our activities geographically to save on parking. For example, one day we went on a sight-seeing boat tour, then walked over the a retired-ore-freighter-turned-museum and only paid one parking fee, which was actually reimbursed by the tour company.
We also hit a lot of state parks, which was mostly free, except for the daily parking permits.
Some of the museums had gotten together to offer a “3 attractions for the price of 2” deal. This was available to us, but I didn’t find out about it until the end of the week. Luckily, it only cost us a few dollars more to use the other coupons.
When we had some spare time, we did other things, like bowling or catching a matinee. They were just some cheap time-fillers, but still good times.
All in all, we had a great time. Nobody was bored and we didn’t end up broke. A good time was had by all, and I got to teach my son how to play poker.
How do you save money on vacation?
The Game of Thrones Guide to Personal Finance
The Game of Thrones series was something I tried to avoid for a while as an HBO-hyped soft-core way to steal an hour of an audience’s life every week.

Then I read the first book. Within minutes of finishing it, I downloaded the second, followed by the rest.
I haven’t seen the show, but I have read all of the books. If you are into court intrigue and gratuitous sex and violence, you’ll enjoy the series.
If you aren’t into those things, you can still pick up some good financial lessons from the series.
Everything you care about will die.
You may not have to worry about your son shooting you in the stomach with a crossbow, or your foster-son burning your castle down while you’re away, but bad things happen. Your company will close or your car will break down or your refrigerator will die. Allow me to repeat myself: Bad things happen. Prepare for them now.
What will you do if one of your appliances break, or your kid needs braces? After the emergency is the wrong time to start thinking about it.
Money solves a lot of problems.
If you’ve got some money set aside, whether it’s a repair fund, and emergency fund, or just a mayonnaise jar full of cash buried in the backyard, it’s going to help you survive life’s little upsets. You don’t need enough to buy an opposing army’s loyalty, just enough to get you through whatever financial emergency is currently rocking your world.
You can’t buy loyalty.
Even if you sell your sister to the barbarians in exchange for their fighting prowess, you can’t rely on that. Don’t think that buying a car for your kid is a good replacement for spending time with her, or that a fancy vacation can take the place of regular, meaningful conversations with your wife. Money solves a lot of things, but it can’t take the place of actually being there for your loved ones. Your presence means more than your presents.
It all boils down to this:
Bad things happen, but you can protect yourself with a combination of money and meaningful relationships.
Budget Lesson, Part 3
I keep calling these lessons, but they are examples and explanations, more than lessons. Names aside, please see Part 1 and Part 2 to catch up. The Google Doc of this example is here.

This time, I’m going to review my non-monthly bills. These are the bills that have to be paid, but not on a monthly basis. Some are annual, others are quarterly, or even weekly. Every month, the amount–adjusted to the monthly equivalent–is set aside in Quicken.
- School Lunch – We don’t qualify for any of the reduced lunch plan, and I don’t know that it is possible to send a brown-bag lunch that is both cheaper and healthier than the school’s menu. This is automatically replenished whenever it gets below $15. This actually gets paid about every other month.
- Property Taxes – Semi-annual and increasing every year. I know the valuations around me, so I don’t think an appeal would win.
- Life insurance – We pay this quarterly. If I die, my family will be completely covered for several years, without adjusting a single expense. If the expenses are adjusted to account for the fact that I won’t be eating, driving, or using electricity, it will last much longer. This is a separate policy from the one discussed in Part 2. GET INSURANCE! Take care of your family.
- AAA – Since we got reliable cars, this hasn’t been a money-saver, but it’s priceless in terms of peace of mind.
- Vehicle Registration – We have two cars and a motorcycle that need registration every year. I’m planning to sell the bike in the spring, but I was planning that for last spring, too. It’s easy to put that off, since I enjoy riding.
- Daycare – Daycare is a weekly expense. As a two-income family, this isn’t an expense we can do away with…yet. As time goes on, the bill will be getting lower. In June, my youngest reaches a cheaper pricing table and my oldest is almost ready to be done with daycare completely.
- City Bill – Our garbage and sewer are paid through the city on a quarterly basis.
- Web host – I’ve got this blog, plus a few other side projects hosted here. I have been simplifying and reducing the projects that aren’t fun or profitable, but I’m not sure this expense will ever go away.
There aren’t too many items here that can be legitimately and responsibly trimmed.
Whiners
I have a lot of friends and family in different financial stages in their lives. Some are deeper in debt than I am, others are just starting to dig their own pit, still others have paid off every cent of debt they’ve ever used. That’s okay; as they say, it takes all kinds to make the world go round.
Out of all of those, the only ones who irritate me are the spendthrift whiners. These are the people who spend 28 days a month struggling to make ends meet and complaining about how hard their lives are. They make snide comments about how easy other people have it, and act like they are being cheated out of their birthright whenever anybody does anything fun that they can’t do because they are too broke.
The other two days—or sometimes three—of the month, are payday. These are the days the the spendthrift whiners try to make themselves feel rich for 24 hours, while wondering why you aren’t willing to hit the fancy restaurants and expensive vacations with them. This is the day they will buy a dozen moves, or a new home theater system, or a big screen TV. It’s the day they will drop a non-refundable deposit on an exotic vacation, or shop for a new car. Before they know what’s happening, the money is gone and they are broke again until next payday, condemned to whining about their horrible situation, while their spendthrift-whiner friends and neighbors complain about the injustice of having to go without luxuries while our hypothetical spendthrift whiners have a big screen TV and an exotic vacation to Dubuque booked.
These people give no thought to the future. Their life savings consist of depreciating electronics and a fancy scrapbook. What do they do when life catches them by surprise? They come begging for a loan, or charge the emergency to a credit card while complaining about the cost of interest. Ultimately, everyone who plans ahead and sets some money aside is obviously trying to rip them off, because nobody can actually do well for themselves without being crooked.
They are absolutely convinced that life is too hard to succeed, and they refuse to examine their own behavior to find the cause of their problems.
Until payday.

Time vs Money
In this corner, weighing in at the only thing you have in this life that you can’t possibly get more of: Time!
And in this corner, weighing in at the thing people think they need to be happy: Money!
Keep it clean. No biting, scratching or hitting your opponents with a chair unless my back is turned. Fight!
Yesterday was Jimmy John’s customer appreciation day. They had subs for $1, but you had to go there in person to get it. At noon, there were more than 50 people standing in line. If it takes 1 minute to make a sandwich, that’s almost an hour in line. To save $5.
Good for Jimmy John’s. They brought thousands of extra people into the restaurant and had a huge line running down the sidewalk. That makes them look great to everyone driving by.
But, the people? Really? Would you work, at any job, for anyone(excluding charitable work) for $5 per hour?
Round 1: Time!
My mother-in-law regularly drive 6 miles out of her way to save 5 cent per gallon on gas. If usually takes 10-15 minutes to get there, if the stoplights behave and traffic is decent. If she arrive with her gas gauge on “E”, she gets to put 15 gallons of gas in her car, for a savings of 75 cents. That’s an effective rate of $2.25 per hour, not counting the gas used to drive there. However, if I ask her to give her $2 to stand in her driveway doing nothing for an hour, she looks at me like I’m nuts!
Round 2: Time!
My wife will occasionally make a shopping list that includes coupons and items spanning three grocery stores. If that were to happen, there would be an extra hour wasted, just traveling between the stores, minimum. Then another hour wasted walking past the items in the first store that were slated to be purchased at the second, or third store. Add another 15 minutes per store to check out, and we’re looking at 2 and a half hours down the tubes to save a possible $20?
No freaking way.
Round 3: Time!
My time is valuable. No matter what I do, or how hard I work, I can never get more than my allotment. Why would I waste it to save a fraction of what I can earn by using it in other ways?
And the winner is….Time!
