Funeral Costs: How to Keep it Inexpensive, Without Being Cheap
The average funeral costs $6500. Many people die with absolutely no savings. Even if there is life insurance, it takes weeks to get the money, while a funeral is completed within a week.
Funeral homes have an easy sales pitch. Nobody wants to sully the memory of their loved ones. The tiniest hint of a guilt trip will have most families upgrading to the silk pillow in a second. Here’s a secret: Your loved one doesn’t care. I’m not recommending using garbage bags and a dumpster. By all means, treat your loved ones with care, but don’t go overboard.
Not everyone is comfortable with cremation, and some religions don’t permit it, but it is probably the least expensive way to process a body. It costs approximately $1400 to cremate a body and you can get very attractive urns for under $100. Compare that to a $3500 casket and storage & transportation fees, and–from a strictly monetary standpoint–the choice is clear.
Don’t worry too much about decorating. Flowers aren’t cheap and florists don’t tend to offer discounts to people who aren’t emotionally prepared to negotiate and who are in a time crunch to find the flowers they need. Get a few bouquets for a small display around the casket or urn, and let the rest take care of itself. Many of the guests will bring flowers, so the entrance will soon be decorated for free, and that’s the part that makes the first impression.
Shopping online can save you a lot of money on an urn. Funeral homes will try to sell you a $500 urn, which may include a 1000% markup. If you buy online, you will have to pay for overnight shipping, but that’s a small cost compared to the standard markup. You can also find a huge discount on attractive caskets by shopping outside of the funeral home. Federal law prohibits funeral homes from requiring that you buy a casket from them or charging you a fee for getting one elsewhere.
This may be the most ghoulish part of this article, but you can dig the grave yourself. It’s probably not worth it for a full-size casket, but for an urn, you can save hundreds of dollars. An urn generally only needs to be buried 18 inches deep, as opposed to the 6 feet required for caskets. Just be sure to check with the cemetery and get the burial location right. If you think it’s ghoulish to dig the grave, just picture digging it up. Not fun.
Planning a funeral is never enjoyable, and it’s often expensive. Nothing you do will make it fun, but it is possible to make it affordable.

Is It Time For a New Car?
So far this summer, we’ve sold a 1984 Cadillac, a 1994 Mercury Sable, and a 1976 Lincoln Continental.
That’s most of the vehicles we inherited in April.
Now, we’ve got a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica, a 2001 Ford F150, a 2009 Dodge Caliber, and a 1986 Honda Shadow.
According to Kelly Blue Book, the Caliber has a resale value of $10,065 and a trade-in value of $8470.
The F150 is worth $6,418/4,923.
The Pacifica is worth $7,738/$6,093.
The bike is worth about $1,500.
We own all of them, free and clear, right now.
With our current situation, the F150 and the Caliber aren’t working. We have 3 kids. The oldest is 12 and pushing 6 feet tall. He barely fits in the backseat of either and is forced to wedge himself against a car seat if we take either of these vehicles anywhere. Even the front seats don’t have a lot of leg room, and I’m not exactly short or small.
We are also a popular place to hang out and almost always have an extra kid or two on the weekends. Right now, that means we take two cars if we have to go somewhere.
On top of that, my girls ride in a saddle club on borrowed horses. We are planning to buy a horse trailer and (shudder) lease a couple of ponies next summer.
So, our requirements are:
- Seat 7-8 people
- Full-sized 3rd row
- Towing capacity of at least 5000 pounds
- More than 20mpg highway
- Comfortable front seat
Based on our initial research, the Chevy Traverse meets our needs. Depending on the configuration, it seats 7 or 8 people with a full-sized 3rd row, has a 5200 pound towing capacity, and is rated for 24 mpg on the highway. Locally, there is a 2010 model with 50,000 miles for $19,000, which is dead-on with blue book. For another $1500, we can make it all wheel drive and 2011, which is below blue book. Consumer reports rates it pretty high, but Edmunds has some mixed reviews.
We should be able to sell the F150 and the Caliber for $12-13,000. That only leaves about $6,000 left, which we should have after the remodel on our rental property. I’m almost positive we’ll pull the trigger on a new car in the next month or two.

30 Day Project Update
My first 30 Day Project for the month of February has been to work my way up to doing 100 pushups in a single set. At the end of January, I did a test to find my baseline, my starting point. I could do 20 pushups, but there was no way 21 would happen.
My plan, based purely on the math, was to start from there, doing 5 sets in the morning and 5 more at night, adding a set number to each set every day. That lasted a day.
The problem with starting a new exercise routine at my max level and progressing from there is the pain. Holy wow, that hurt on the second day. I was doing sets of 5, then. Ow.
The new plan has worked much better. It is an aggressive, self-correcting progression that automatically correct for over-extending myself.
I do 5 sets. Each set is based on the maximum set in my previous session. My first set is half of my max. The next 3 sets are 3/4 of my max, and the final set ends when my abs are cramping and I want to cry, establishing my max for the next session. If I over-extended myself in the previous session, this set either shrinks or stays the same. If the final set stagnates for a couple of days, I take a day off to rest. When I come back, the sets improve drastically.
How well has this worked? Last night, at the halfway point for the month, I ended with a set of 75 pushups and noticable muscle growth. Next month, I’m doing situps and I will be using the same plan.
Plan #2 is also coming along well. Details in 2 weeks.
30 Day Project – July

My 30 Day Project for the month of July is to write. Every day.
Originally, it was going to be specifically to write fiction every day, but I’ve decided to change the rules.
I am going to write at least 500 words every day. That isn’t much, just a page or so. It may be fiction, it may be blog posts, it be other articles. Heck, it may even be an epic Facebook update! Some of the writing will be posted here, some will be submitted elsewhere, hopefully for pay. Some of it will live on in my personal archives, for cyber-archeologists of the future to one day uncover and use to determine that we all trying to build a jetpack that is cleverly disguised as a Hannah Montana moped. All of the writing will be original. There will be no rewritten or spun articles.
My tools? Clay tablets and a heavy stylus. Err….my computer for most of it, pen and paper for some of it, my blackberry for anything that strikes me while I left the good tools at home.
Why am I doing this?
I want to be a better writer. I’ve always had things to say and stories to share. I’ve rarely had the discipline to actually share them. I want to build that discipline, even though I’ve already missed two days this month.
I also want to develop my personal style–my voice–in a way that can only happen with experience. You get better at writing by writing, not reading about writing or thinking about writing. Putting pen to paper is the only way to improve your style and develop your voice.
So that’s what I’m going to do.
